Kobold

Lizard-like and diminutive, kobold broods populate foothills and mountains. They are often found occupying ancient ruins, abandoned mines, and other vacated settlements and structures.

Standing roughly 2 ½ feet tall and averaging a mere 35 pounds, kobolds resemble miniature, bipedal drakes. Stiff, leathery scales cover the tops of their heads, down their backs, and on to their tails. They range in color from muddy brown to chameleon green and offer limited protection against harsh environments. Their faces, as well as the rest of their “soft spots” are covered by smaller, finer, smoother scales that run the gamut in terms of colors, stripes, spots, and other patterns.

Double-jointed, sinewy legs allow kobolds to scamper surprisingly fast for their size, aided by clawed toes that dig into any surface for traction. Their hands are scaled and webbed, tipped with short, durable claws - perfect for burrowing. Their tails, long and whip-like, twitch and wag constantly - often betraying their emotions.

Their heads are surprisingly large for their bodies, dominated by wide, dark, luminous eyes that gleam and shimmer. A pair of bony crests, reminiscent of miniature horns, protrude from above their brows, curving backward like tiny dragon horns. Their jaws are large and powerful, filled with two rows of sharp, serrated teeth.

Ancestral Traits

Age

Young kobolds mature rapidly after hatching. They reach adolescence by age 4, and adulthood by 12. The average lifespan of a kobold is roughly 80 years for those that avoid the typical factors that disproportionately affect them: violence, harsh environments, disease, and starvation.

Random Height and Weight

You may roll for your character's height and weight on the Random Height and Weight table. The roll in the Height Modifier column adds a number (in inches) to the character's base height. To get a weight, multiply the number you rolled for height by the roll in the Weight Modifier column and add the result (in pounds) to the base weight.

Darkvision

You have superior vision in dark and dim conditions. Within a 60 ft. radius, you can see in dim light as if it were bright light and in darkness as if it were dim light. Areas of darkness inside your Darkvision radius are only lightly obscured as far as you are concerned. You can't discern color in darkness, only shades of gray.

Variant Rule: Low-light Vision

At 1st level, a character with the Darkvision or Superior Darkvision ancestral trait may exchange it for Low-light Vision.

Cold-blooded

Choose either a hot or cold climate. For the purpose of resisting Extreme Heat or Extreme Cold, you are considered naturally adapted.

Characters adapted to cold climates automatically succeed on saving throws against Extreme Cold, but roll with disadvantage on saving throws against Extreme Heat. Characters adapted to hot climates automatically succeed on saving throws against Extreme Heat, but roll with disadvantage on saving throws against Extreme Cold.

Tail

You have a tail that helps you maintain balance. You have advantage on all Dexterity (Acrobatics) checks that would result in you falling prone.
